In contrast to older keys, modern car keys programmed have specific chips in them that are unique to each car. This prevents thieves from simply taking the key and starting the car.
The keys are usually purchased from the dealership or copied by a locksmith. The procedure for programming the key differs by manufacturer and involves turning the key to the off position, without triggering the engine, and then taking it off it after a specific time frame.
Transponder Codes
As its name suggests, transponders transmit an encoded signal with a four-digit number code when it is being questioned by air traffic control. This signal is known as an SQUAWK code and is the basis for identifying aircraft on radar screens. It also serves to send specific messages to air traffic control in the event of an emergency or to alert air traffic controllers of changing weather conditions. Squawk codes are often utilized to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot is unable to talk on the radio and are very important to ensure safe flying.
Every aircraft has a transponder which responds to radar interrogation with an identifier code. This enables ATC to locate an aircraft on a busy screen. Transponders have several different modes that differ in how they respond to interrogation. Mode A transmits only the code, while mode C includes data on altitude. Mode S transponders provide more detailed information like callsigns and position. This can be useful when flying in airspace with a lot of people.
A common sight is a small beige box that is located under the pilot's seat in the majority of aircraft. The transponder is a tiny beige box used to transmit the SQUAWK code every time the air traffic control system activates the aircraft. The transponder can be set to the 'ON' position, ALT or SBY (standby) position.
It's not uncommon to hear a pilot told by air traffic control to "squawk ident". This is a directive for the pilot to press the IDENT button on their transponder. The ident button makes the aircraft blink on ATC radar screens, allowing them to easily identify your aircraft on the screen.
There are 63 distinct codes that can be assigned to aircrafts but there are also certain reserved codes that prohibit the use of a particular code in areas of high traffic or in emergencies. The discrete code blocks are configured using statistical analysis to limit the chances that two aircraft with the same SQUAWK codes will be in the same sector at any one time.
A transponder key contains an individual chip that holds the ID code. If the security light on a car key reprogrammed is illuminated, it indicates that the ID code of the key programming car doesn't match the code that is stored in the computer. If this occurs, the vehicle's immobilizer will be disabled and it won't start unless another key is used. A PIN code is a series of numbers (usually 4 or 6 digits) that are used to gain access to an item or service. For instance, a smart phone, for example, has PIN codes that the user has to enter each time they use the device. Even though a longer PIN might seem more secure than a shorter one, it is possible to hack or guess the four-digit PIN. It is recommended that a PIN must be at minimum six digits long with a mix of letters and numbers, to give more security. Some OEMs also require PIN codes for the aftermarket key programmer to ensure security to stop unauthorised persons from stealing data from modules.
VIN Numbers
VIN numbers can be used to identify cars and provide a wealth information about them. VIN numbers are unique to every vehicle on the planet and are not applicable to alien vehicles (or whatever). The 17 digits of a VIN code are made up of a combination of numbers and letters that can be decoded to reveal vital information about your vehicle or truck.

The VIN code is a serial code with six digits that identify an automobile or truck. The last digit of the VIN code is also the check-digit. The remaining numbers have been converted into numbers.
